What is a News Feed?
News feeds are replacing e-mail newsletters. A news feed is spam-free and e-mail free. News feeds can offer an easier way to find out what is on a website or what current events are going on, without searching through the entire website. News feeds also ensure your privacy by not using e-mail.
Typically, a news feed is a regularly updated summary from that website. This can be news, blog updates, current events, sales announcements, weather, etc. A news feed is usually represented with
or something similar.
When you subscribe to a website’s news feed, you’ll receive a summary of new content from that website. Each summary includes a link to the full version on that particular website.
In order to read a news feed you’ll need a ‘feed reader’ (e.g., feed aggregator). Here are a few free feed readers to try out:
- Google Reader (reader.google.com)
- NetNewsWire for Mac (http://www.newsgator.com/individuals/netnewswire/default.aspx)
- FeedDemon for Windows (http://www.newsgator.com/individuals/feeddemon/default.aspx)
When you decide to unsubscribe to a news feed, you simply delete it.
